Introduction

Over the years, various initiatives have sought to connect Nigerian businesses with Canada. However, these efforts have lacked direct government involvement, leading to regulatory challenges, limited trade access, and missed investment opportunities. In a government-led economy like Nigeria, official participation is critical to shaping policies, providing institutional support, and fostering a conducive trade environment. Likewise, Canadian businesses and investors require structured engagement with Nigerian policymakers to understand regulatory frameworks and investment incentives.

A key challenge for Nigerian exporters, particularly nano, micro, small, and medium enterprises (NMSMEs), is the lack of access to trade information and formal market entry into Canada. For example, despite Nigeria being the world’s largest producer of yams, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) does not currently recognize Nigeria as an eligible supplier, while Ghana enjoys market access. Additionally, there is no established list of admissible Nigerian products in Canada, creating an obstacle to formal trade expansion.
